What Is Drawdown in Proprietary Trading?
In professional proprietary trading, drawdown measures the peak-to-trough decline of an account’s equity during a specified period. It is the primary metric evaluation firms use to assess a trader's risk discipline and longevity.
FundedXCapital monitors two primary risk boundaries on every evaluation and funded account:
- Daily Loss Limit (Daily Drawdown): The maximum amount an account may lose in a single trading session relative to that day’s starting balance.
- Maximum Trailing Drawdown: The overall threshold that trails the highest account equity reached, establishing an absolute floor below which the account must never drop.
1. The Daily Loss Limit Explained
The Daily Loss Limit is reset at the start of every trading day (09:15 AM IST for Indian markets). It is calculated based on your starting equity/balance at 09:15 AM IST, not your original account creation balance.
Daily Stop Level = Starting Day Equity - (Starting Day Equity × Daily Loss %)
Worked Example (₹10,00,000 Account with 4% Daily Limit):
- Starting Balance: ₹10,00,000
- Daily Loss Limit (4%): ₹40,000
- Minimum Equity Level: ₹9,60,000. If your open equity drops to or below ₹9,60,000 at any point during that day, a daily loss breach is recorded.
- Next Day After Profit: If you close the day at ₹10,30,000, your starting equity for the next trading day is ₹10,30,000. Your new daily limit for Day 2 is 4% of ₹10,30,000 = ₹41,200 (Stop level: ₹9,88,800).
2. Maximum Trailing Drawdown Explained
A trailing drawdown locks in profits and protects accumulated gains by rising ("trailing") as your account equity achieves new high-water marks. Once the trailing threshold reaches your initial starting balance, it locks and ceases to rise further.
Trailing Drawdown Level = Highest Closed High-Water Mark - (Account Capital × Max Drawdown %)
Step-by-Step Trailing Scenario (₹5,00,000 Account with 6% Trailing Drawdown = ₹30,000 buffer):
| Stage / Day |
Account Balance |
High-Water Mark |
Trailing Stop Floor |
Remaining Buffer |
| Day 1 (Start) |
₹5,00,000 |
₹5,00,000 |
₹4,70,000 |
₹30,000 |
| Day 2 (Profit) |
₹5,15,000 |
₹5,15,000 |
₹4,85,000 |
₹30,000 |
| Day 3 (Profit) |
₹5,35,000 |
₹5,35,000 |
₹5,00,000 (Locked) |
₹35,000 |
| Day 4 (Retracement) |
₹5,10,000 |
₹5,35,000 |
₹5,00,000 (Locked) |
₹10,000 |
Notice how on Day 3, because the trailing floor reached the original account starting balance of ₹5,00,000, it permanently locked. Even if the account grows to ₹5,50,000 or beyond, the maximum loss floor never rises above ₹5,00,000, giving the trader complete freedom to let profits run.
3. Instrument-Level Capital Usage Limits
To prevent reckless over-concentration in a single contract, FundedXCapital enforces automated pre-trade risk validations:
- Index Contracts (Nifty, Bank Nifty, FinNifty, Sensex, Midcap Nifty): Maximum 50% of account capital permitted in margin exposure per index.
- Individual Stock Contracts: Maximum 25% of account capital permitted per individual stock equity or derivative.
- Overall Exposure: Must always remain within the configured program capital limit. Orders attempting to exceed these thresholds are rejected instantly before execution.
